It's been nearly a full year since the launch of Windows Vista and Hyperion has observed that few enterprises have taken the plunge to migrate. Although Vista's security enhancements are plenty and there is no argument that the new platforms' protective measures are an improvement, they are a mere incremental update, not a critical upgrade. Companies investigating the migration to Vista should be mindful of their actual business needs and not jump to early adoption for the sake of being iconic.

The simple fact is Windows XP is still a perfectly functional desktop operating system. It is a matured platform with excellent support and very few short comings for the needs of business. As of yet, there are no compelling reasons to make the switch excepting the increased cost of purchasing new hardware with OEM Windows XP licenses.

Although Vista is easier to migrate to than previous versions of Windows due to the extensive number of upgrade and deployment tools available, there are still a significant number challenges. Application compatibility and driver support is still limited; minimum hardware requirements far surpass the majority of business machines currently in use; training requirements are extensive due to the vastly altered user environment.

Of course, there will come a day when Vista will be a required upgrade, but for some, earlier adoption may bring value. The top reasons for migration include security enhancements, exisiting hardware refresh policies, and improved system performance. The inevitability of Windows OS migration, however, should not govern whether your business is ready to begin the move to Vista.

Contact Hyperion today to assess your technology infrastructure so you're better equipped to make the decision if Vista migration is right for your company.
